Introduction

SmartEnneagram is committed to publishing Enneagram content that is accurate, well-sourced, transparent, and genuinely useful. This Content Policy describes the standards we apply to every piece of content on smartenneagram.com — including editorial articles, assessment questions, AI-generated personality analyses, type descriptions, and educational guides.

"We believe the Enneagram is a serious framework for self-understanding that deserves rigorous, honest treatment; not pop-psychology shortcuts or unsubstantiated claims." SmartEnneagram Content Policy

This policy applies equally to human-written content and content produced with AI assistance. We make no distinction in quality standards between the two: both must meet the same accuracy, sourcing, and review requirements.

Editorial Standards

All content published on SmartEnneagram adheres to the following core editorial principles:

1

Primary Source Grounding

Every substantive claim about Enneagram types, dynamics, or theory must be traceable to at least one primary scholarly source. We do not publish original Enneagram theory of our own invention without clearly labeling it as such.

2

Intellectual Honesty

We acknowledge limitations, uncertainties, and areas of genuine scholarly disagreement. We do not present contested claims as established fact, and we disclose when the evidence for a claim is limited.

3

Clarity and Accessibility

Expert-level content written in plain, accessible English. Technical terminology is defined in context. Complex frameworks are explained with examples. We write for curious adults, not academic specialists.

4

No Harm Principle

Content must not encourage stereotyping, pathologize personality types, or promote discriminatory uses of the Enneagram. We explicitly discourage using type labels to judge, limit, or categorize others.

AI-Generated Content Disclosure

SmartEnneagram uses artificial intelligence in multiple aspects of content creation and service delivery. In the interest of full transparency, we disclose exactly how AI is used:

Content Writing Assistance

AI language models, specifically GPT-4o, Claude, and Gemini; may be used as drafting and research tools for editorial content. When AI is used in content creation:

  • AI-generated drafts are always reviewed, fact-checked, and substantially edited by human editors before publication
  • All factual claims in AI-assisted content are independently verified against primary sources
  • AI does not make final editorial decisions about content accuracy, tone, or publication
  • AI-generated content is held to the same quality and sourcing standards as fully human-written content

Assessment Analysis

Our personality assessment uses three AI models (GPT-4o, Claude Sonnet 3.5, and Gemini 1.5 Pro) to analyze user responses on a per-question basis. This AI-generated analysis:

  • Is clearly labeled as AI-generated in the user interface
  • Is produced in real-time based on the specific responses provided
  • May vary between sessions even with identical inputs, due to the probabilistic nature of AI models
  • Should be interpreted as one perspective among many, not as a definitive psychological assessment
  • Is grounded in prompt engineering that references established Enneagram scholarship
AI Limitations

AI models can produce plausible-sounding but incorrect information ("hallucinations"), may reflect biases present in their training data, and cannot truly "understand" human psychology. Our editorial review process is specifically designed to catch and correct AI-generated inaccuracies before publication.

Citation Standards

When referencing specific claims from these works, we follow these standards:

  • Direct attribution: When a concept or framework originates from a specific author (e.g., "Levels of Development" from Riso & Hudson), we attribute it directly
  • Cross-reference verification: Core type descriptions are verified against at least two independent primary sources before publication
  • Contested claims: When primary sources disagree (e.g., on subtype descriptions or historical origins), we present both perspectives and note the disagreement
  • No fabricated citations: We never attribute claims to sources we have not directly consulted. If AI suggests a citation, it is independently verified before inclusion

Accuracy Standards

SmartEnneagram content undergoes a multi-stage review process:

Pre-Publication Review

  • Source verification: Every factual claim is traced to its primary source and verified for accuracy of attribution
  • Internal consistency: Content is checked against existing pages on the site to ensure consistency in how types, dynamics, and frameworks are described
  • Bias check: Content is reviewed for implicit biases, stereotyping, or value judgments about specific types
  • Readability review: Content is tested for clarity and accessibility to a general adult audience

Post-Publication Maintenance

  • Pillar pages are reviewed quarterly for accuracy and currency
  • Standard articles are reviewed every six months
  • All pages display their publication date and last-modified date
  • Modification dates are only updated when substantive content changes are made

Corrections Policy

We correct errors promptly and transparently:

  • Factual errors are corrected within 48 hours of identification
  • Corrections are noted inline with a brief description of what was changed and when
  • We do not silently edit published content without acknowledgment
  • Significant corrections (those affecting core claims or type descriptions) are noted in our internal editorial log
  • We do not delete pages to avoid accountability for errors

Scientific Integrity Statement

SmartEnneagram is committed to intellectual and scientific honesty regarding the Enneagram:

Our Position

The Enneagram personality system is a rich framework for self-understanding supported by a substantial body of literature and clinical observation. However, it has not achieved the same level of empirical validation as instruments such as the Big Five personality model. We present the Enneagram honestly — with both its considerable strengths and its documented limitations — and we never overclaim its scientific status.

Specifically, we commit to the following:

  • We do not describe the Enneagram as "scientifically proven" or "clinically validated" in a general sense
  • We cite specific studies when making claims about validity or reliability, and we report their limitations
  • We acknowledge that our AI-powered assessment has not undergone independent psychometric validation by an accredited research institution
  • We distinguish between the Enneagram as a self-discovery tool and clinical psychological instruments that require administration by licensed professionals
  • We support and encourage academic research into the Enneagram's psychometric properties
  • We are transparent about our team's qualifications: SmartEnneagram is not operated by licensed psychologists, and we do not claim clinical expertise
